Stem cell research has a number of societal implications. Consequently, it is surrounded by controversy.
This controversy is fueled by both misunderstandings and what most consider valid ethical concerns. It is a controversy that embroils the common citizen, scientists, ethicists and those in the medical
profession alike. The values involved with the dilemma of stem cell research include the basic moral issues of creating and modifying life as well as the value of enhancing
the lives of others. These values, of course, fall on the opposite ends of the moral scale according to the critics of stem cell research.
Stem cells are immature cells which have potential application in the replacement of tissues or organs damaged by diseases such as cancer (Vogel, 1999). As
"science fiction" as it may seem, gaining a better understanding of stem cells may give scientist the potential to cultivate tissues or even entire organs under laboratory conditions (Vogel, 1999).
Indeed, by capturing the power of the stem cell researchers will eventually be able to essentially grow any organ or tissue in a laboratory situation (Licking, 1998; Brownlee and
Schrof, 1998). Many of these cells, in fact, have the capability of developing into all of the 210 types of human tissue which exists (Brownlee and Schrof, 1998).
Others have a narrower range of possibilities in terms of their development potential but even these are of potential tremendous benefit in terms of medical applications.
