the question then is, how many people know what they are talking about when they argue so ferociously on one side or the other? A stem cell is called a
stem cell because all other cells in the body stem from this one.1 The stem cell must wait for some sort of signal to tell it what it should become
and when the signal comes, the cell slowly differentiates what type of cell it is supposed to be.2 The signal basically tells this cell "to turn on certain genes and
make new proteins."3 Stem cells can be taken from a number of sources, such as an early embryo, the umbilical cord blood and from a variety of adult tissues.4
The embryonic stem cells are the most versatile, which is what makes them so valuable in research. Because they can become a number of other types of cells, embryonic stems
cells are referred to as pluripotent.5 These cells are "derived from embryos generated by in vitro fertilization." Omitting a number of steps and stages, embryonic cells will eventually become totipotent
cells, go through some other stages until they reach a stage where it is possible to pick up a stem cell with a pipette, a very small instrument, and
transferred to a Petri dish.6 These cells are self-renewing, which is another reason embryonic stem cells are so valuable in research.7 The new cells might be transplanted to a
