some time. Yet, what stem cell research sells is hope, according to this author, as cures for the diseases the research is supposed to create, could be decades away. She
gives a good example by noting that patients who wrote to President Bush to say that they did not have a year or two to wait for research to begin
were misinformed (Gibbs). Scientists claim that a cure is probably at least a decade away (Gibbs). The author goes into both sides of the issue (Gibbs). The synopsis of
the argument is: " Opponents of ESC research--starting with Bush--argue that you cant destroy life in order to save it; supporters argue that an eight-cell embryo doesnt count as a
human life in the first place--not when compared with the life it could help save" (Gibbs). Scientists however do argue that they need new lines to get anywhere (Gibbs). In
other words, expansion of stem cell research is important to finding cures for diseases. Gibbs duly notes that because of the ethical dilemma, scientists are looking for less controversial types
of stem cells (Gibbs). Yet, many other sources do not seem as powerful as embryonic stem cells; still, the author notes that cord blood has been quite useful in recent
years (Gibbs). Another issue is noted, which is really an issue for all scientific research. Gibbs writes: " You cant find out for sure until you test in humans, but
its hard to test in humans until you can be reasonably sure you wont harm them in the process." The author goes on to look briefly at each type of
stem cell and their use. Towards the end of the piece, it seems as if Gibbs supports the research, despite the false promises she seems to think politicians make. She
