possible treatments that cover a broad spectrum of diseases and conditions, such as Alzheimers disease, spinal cord injuries and Parkinsons disease (Baird, 2008). Through stem cell research, it may be
possible to produce insulin-producing cells that benefit diabetics or heart muscle cells for the benefit of heart attack victims (Baird, 2008). Nevertheless, this area of research is highly controversial due
to its moral implications. Embryonic stem cells are harvested from embryos that are in the earliest stages of reproduction, which is when the embryo is still a blastocyst. The
processes associated with in vitro fertilization usually produce more embryos than are required to aid a couple in achieving a viable pregnancy. The couple designates what to do with these
extra embryos and their options are to donate them to donate them to another infertile couple, destroy them or allow their use in research (Cogdell, 2009). Under the Bush administration,
federal funding to embryonic research was limited to only those cell lines that had been previously established, which was a position based on the concept that this line of research
