society. There are many people who argue that stem cell research is an incredible necessity and others who feel that it goes against nature and should not be conducted. The
following paper examines the pros and cons of stem cell research as well as how stem cell research involves the profession of nursing. Stem Cell Research
"The excitement about stem cell research is primarily due to the medical benefits in areas of regenerative medicine and therapeutic cloning" (Phillips, 2009). It offers
the potential to truly treat some difficult conditions such as various forms of cancer, spinal cord injuries, diabetes, Parkinsons, Alzheimers and many other serious conditions (Phillips, 2009). But, at the
same time there are many who feel that messing around with nature, so to speak, is only going to lead to trouble as the future may involve cloning individuals and
essentially doing Gods work. Clearly there are some very powerful reasons for supporting and encouraging stem cell research but there are also
reasons why it is not necessarily a positive endeavor. The cons are normally confined to stem cell research that involves embryos: "Use of embryonic stem cells for reasearch involves the
destruction of blastocysts formed from laboratory-fertilized human eggs. For those who believe that life begins at conception, the blastocyst is a human life and to destroy it is unacceptable and
immoral. This seems to be the only controversial issue standing in the way of stem cell research in North America" (Phillips, 2009). According to another author, one con, concerning embryonic
