current administration took this position due to the position of the religious right that a fertilized ovum should be considered human from the moment of conception. Embryonic stem cells obtained, prior to this ban, from extra embryos that were obtained for the process of in vitro fertilization and, therefore, slated for either destruction or indefinite storage at sub-zero temperature. The following examination of stem cell research looks at the pros, cons, and ethics of this controversial debate. To fully understand the issues that this debate raises, it is first necessary to define what a stem cell is and to also have a basic understanding of how embryonic stem cell research is conducted. Many people equate the word "embryo" with "fetus" and consider the two terms to be synonyms (Steinbock 26). Embryos and fetuses are actually quite different. Stem cells are extracted prior to the completion of fertilization while the embryo is a blastocyst (Steinbock 26). Blastocysts are "microscope balls of undifferentiated cells" (Steinbock 26). The fact that stem cells are extracted before the fertilization process is completed refers to another misconception, which is that fertilization is a something that occurs instantly when a sperm is absorbed into an egg. It is actually a process that takes place over the course of a definite period of time (Steinbeck 26). The utility of stem cells derives from the fact that embryo cells at this early stage of development are "totipotent," that is, the cells, as yet, have no designated purpose (Steinbock 26). The biological reality of conception is that a potential human being who is genetically unique from every other human beings does not occur until 14 to 15 days after the sperm is absorbed (DeGrazia 53). The benefits that stem cell research are projected to be truly remarkable. ...
