Stem cell research holds
considerable promise for mankind and, indeed, for the world as a whole. Stem cell research has opened up a myriad of possibilities in terms of medicine and the quality
of life in general (Mulkay 3). Stem cells have the potential of developing into any type of cell. They have the potential to either remain a generalized cell
or to take on specialized function. Consequently, work with stem cells has the potential to be of tremendous value in such applications as fighting disease and infirmity in mankind
and even in expanding populations of endangered species. Stem cell research is one of the most promising developments of the last few decades
in particular in terms of the hope it provides for improved health to the worlds population (Mulkay 37). It has the potential to impact the face of medicine across
all cultures and across all geographic boundaries. Unfortunately there is considerable controversy surrounding stem cell research. As Dolgin notes, the
controversy surrounding the use of embryonic stem cells is tied to the rights and wrongs of the issues of abortion. Because of the controversy, stem cell researchers, however, are
too often put into a position of having to fund their own research or to rely on the limited funds offered by universities and groups such as the Biotechnology Industry
