world this would mean almost certain death for the child, as the list of patients who need donor organs is extremely long and the heart would have to be an
appropriate size and of a compatible blood type in order for the babys body not to reject it. In this future scenario, however, the parents are told not to worry.
Using advanced stem cell research, a heart is cultivated for the baby using genetic material compatible with that of the child, so that there is no fear of rejection and
the baby gets to grow up and live a healthy, productive life. This is scenario is possible, given the promise of embryonic stem cell research, but it is not likely
to happen unless federal restrictions are stem cell research are lifted. It is possible that, eventually, if stem cell research is allowed to move forward, scientists could harness the ability
of these cells to grow replacement tissue for the treatment of spinal cord injuries as well as diabetes and other diseases (Surman). In November of 1998, two research teams, one
headed by John Gearhart of Johns Hopkins University and the other led by James Thomson at the University of Wisconsin, reported that they had succeeded in formulating breakthroughs regarding the
culturing of human embryonic stem cells (Gottweis 444). The research was hailed by the scientific community as revolutionary, as it offers a means for meeting one of medicines greatest challenges--irreversible
organ and tissue damage (Gottweis 444). The isolation and culture of human embryonic stem cells immediately caused speculation that "tailor-made genetically compatible cells and tissues for human medical therapies" might
become possible (Bonnicksen 2). Objections to embryonic stem cell research were raised almost immediately by members of the religious far-right. President George W. Bush, in a speech given August 9,
