observe this, and everyone faces trials and tribulations, perhaps the characters in fictitious pieces are most overwhelmed. They do face significant problems and this in part is planned by the
authors. Of course, the characters only exists in the minds eye of the author and the reader, but truly, these characters are put through a great deal in the course
of a short story or novel. In Steinbecks piece, The Chrysanthemums, the flowers are the subject of what the farmers wife has chosen as her obsession. It might
be a bit of a reach to call the tending to the chrysanthemums an obsession, but the activity is indicative of the one thing that Elisa can do well, and
something that she has taken pride in. Her husbands business successes are large and overshadowing as compared with her interest in the flowers. A great deal of emotion is seen
in this one woman who appears somewhat depressed and feeling unfulfilled. The obvious theme might be that women in those days were just not valued. Here she is tending
to the house and her flower garden, not even having children to care for, and her husband is the one who gets the glory when the farming goes well. Of
course, this bitterness is something felt by most housewives of an earlier generation and particularly in the 1930s when this story takes place, there is little room for Elisa to
thrive in her own right. There was no such thing as a career woman and Elisa would have to accept that. But Elisa soon finds out that her contributions to
the family go unnoticed. While they called it the Great Depression, it is not likely that all housewives were depressed during the time of economic upheaval. Of course, much of
