Background John Steinbecks best known novels dramatize the enormous suffering that was an inherent part of the Great Depression of the 1930s (Vibig 32). His novel Of Mice and Men,
as with so much of Steinbecks fiction, addresses the economic hardship of the Depression, but the main focus this work is on the emotional ramifications that the Depression had on
the lives of the characters within the novel. Including Of Mice and Men, Steinbeck wrote three novellas (short novels) that were formulated as experiments in drama (Hays 92). The experimental
nature of these works is that they consist primarily of dialogue and action, paired with description and virtually no history of a setting or interior monologue (Hays 92). As the
focus of the novel is on its emotional context, Steinbeck uses emotions as a means to tie the various threads of the storyline into a cohesive whole. The themes of
friendliness and loneliness serve this purpose. Of Mice and Men presents in six scenes, which are characterized by a "description-dialogue- action form" that roughly approximates a stage drama
in its effect (Goldhurst 49). Critical opinion agrees on this point. The time scheme covered by the narrative is from Thursday evening through Sunday evening, precise three days (Goldhurst 49).
The setting is the Salinas Valley in California and the characters are primarily unskilled migratory workers who drift from job to job. The principal protagonist is George Milton, who
