family of Tom Joad as he served a prison sentence. But Tom is persistent, finds his family, looks for work, but what is discovered is the poor state of the
nation and Tom feels as if he is not alone by any means. Steinbeck also demonstrates that money is not as important as family, or love. In Chapter 28, for
example, several significant things occur. The chapter begins with a description of the Boxcars (Steinbeck 409). It was noted that the Joads were lucky to get a place and
they had one particular end of a boxcar (409). The routine was the same each day as they rolled and unrolled their mattresses for sleep (409). The family went to
buy food (Steinbeck 410). The little girl wanted candy and the parents reluctantly agreed (410). Eventually, ma called everyone after they had finished their shopping (410). The girls began to
slice potatoes in order to cook a meal (410). There was much discussion about the Cracker Jack that was bought earlier and whether or not it might have made Ruthie
sick (412). Ruthie claimed that the Cracker Jacks were actually stolen (414). It is learned later that Ruthie did get into some sort of fight, and this is something that
would requisite older brothers fighting on the girls behalf (416-417). Tom goes to take care of things (418-419). Later in the chapter, it turns out that a wedding party is
being developed for Al and Aggie who are getting married (424). Soon, Rose of Sharon would have some health problems but the other women help her and she is fine
