as mankind found a moment of relaxation and safety in their cultures, they turned to art and sculpture as a form of expression and representation of ideals and thoughts. One of the most prominent periods in history as it relates to sculpture was the Greek period in history. As one author notes, "Until the 20th century, Greek and Roman sculpture was the most important and, except during the early Middle Ages, the most continuous influence on sculptors in the West. The Greco-Roman blend of realistically observed detail and ideally conceived form has profoundly affected the whole course of sculptural styles in the West" (DiscoverFrance.com). From there, however, sculpture developed in many powerful forms. With that in mind the following paper compares and contrasts the Statue of Meleager from Greek times, 55-45 BC, and the Corpus of Christ from France during the 1250 AD. Statue of Meleager and Corpus of Christ Both pieces of work are clearly sculptures. The Statue of Meleager is carved from marble and the Corpus of Christ is carved from elephant ivory. There are traces of paint on the Corpus of Christ which indicates it was likely painted (Metropolitan Museum of Art). In relationship to size the Statue of Meleager is "H.: 173 cm (68-5/16 in.); Max. W.: 73.7 cm (29 in.); Max. D.: 55.2 cm (21-3/4 in.)" (The Art Institute of Chicago). The Corpus of Christ measures "6 5/8 x 1 11/16 x 1 5/16 in. (16.8 x 4.3 x 3.4 cm)" (Metropolitan Museum of Art). As can be seen the two are very different in size and materials used in the construction or creation. They are, however, both studies of the human form and of the male form.
