a patients vital statistics, such as blood pressure, temperature, etc. However, this writer/tutor also imagines that there are other statistics that would be considered part of the ICU routine. The
student researching this topic should describe these sources of data when writing his or her own paper. As to what types of data that should be collected, but currently are
not collected in the students surgical ICU, literature offers some indications as to what these areas might be. For example, one of the many tasks of surgical
ICU care is to record the ventilator setting. Vawdrey, et al (2007) conducted a study that involved analysis of 29,054 charting ventilator charting events collected over a 12 month period
from 678 ventilated patients receiving care in 4 surgical ICUs. This study explored the mechanics of charting ventilator settings and found that there was a charting delay of 6.1 minutes,
on average, in recording the data and that the data generally took 1.8 minutes to record (Vawdrey, et al, 2007). In 559 instances, 3.9 percent, suggestions generated by a computerized
management protocol, one or more manually charted setting values did not match the Medical Information Bus data (Vawdrey, et al, 2007, p. 295). These researchers concluded that even
within institutions where manual charting of ventilators settings is performed well, "automatic data collection can eliminate delays, improve charting efficiency and reduce errors cause by incorrect data" (Vawdrey, et al,
2007, p. 295). Glycemic control in regards to critically ill adult patients has recently been recognized as a priority in regards to many patients. This involves obtaining statistical information
on blood glucose levels by using point-of-care testing for patients receiving insulin infusions (Kanji, et al, 2005). A study conducted by Kanji, et al (2005) compared three methods of glucose
