Statistics are important in a number of nursing scenarios. The fact that the goal of health care is to improve patient outcome provides a
hint as to where the most useful statistics might be obtained. Patient welfare is affected by both physiological factors and emotional factors. Each of these factors result in
both qualitative and quantitative impacts to patient welfare. Neary (2000) observes that there is considerable debate regarding the appropriateness of quantitative as opposed to qualitative statistical approaches in nursing.
She relates that quantitative methodology is: "operational and takes its rationale from the physical
and natural sciences ....Nurses have favoured such approaches and for a long time seemed reluctant to adopt qualitative approaches" (Neary, 2000, p. 34).
While quantitative approaches provide the means for testing and prediction qualitative approaches allow researchers to better understand behavior (Neary, 2000).
Both, of course, are important factors in patient welfare. Statistics allow us to get a better handle on the degree to which both of those impacts are important.
The question of what statistics should be collected in a medical facility, however, is quite complex in its connotations. The answer is determined by the use to which those
statistics will be put. Numerous factors affect patient welfare and through the use of statistics we can place a numerical gauge on those factors.
Medical professionals almost always collect the most basics of statistics regarding their patients. These statistics include such factors as age, sex, and race. Other
