the validity of hypotheses. In statistics, hypothesis testing is often used to determine whether or not significance can be inferred from an observed measure. This paper will explore the use
of hypothesis testing in a hypothetical scenario. This paragraph helps the student break down the process of hypothesis testing. Hypothesis testing begins by making some inference regarding the value of
a testable parameter, in regards to some other numerical value (Dertling, 2010). To state the matter more plainly, it is an inference about whether one statistical value is less than,
equal to, or greater than a test statistic (Dertling, 2010). In conducting such a test, one develops two hypotheses; one is known as the null hypothesis and the other as
the alternative hypothesis. The null hypothesis is a statement "about the values of one or more population parameters, based on observation and prior knowledge"; it is typically used as a
control in hypothesis testing (Dertling, 2010). The alternative hypothesis is a statement which contradicts the null hypothesis (Dertling, 2010). The purpose of testing is to determine whether or not the
null hypothesis should be rejected in favor of the alternative hypothesis by determining whether or not the conditions of the alternative hypothesis are true often enough to negate chance as
a determining factor (in other words, a test for statistical significance) (Dertling, 2010). The use of hypothesis testing can be understood through a hypothetical example. Suppose that a publisher
