quantitative variable Quantitative is from the Latin word for quantity, indicating amount or count. It relates to specific, measurable items. Quantitative
data can be divided into discrete variables and continuous variables (Introduction to Statistics, n.d.). Discrete variables are "self contained" variables consisting only of isolated points. Continuous variables are
those which consist "of intervals, e.g. 0-9, 10-19, 20-29... etc" (Introduction to Statistics, n.d.). Qualitative data are "labels, or names, for categories of
like items" (Introduction to Statistics, n.d.), and can be divided into four categories. Nominal variables are those with "no inherent order or ranking sequence" (Introduction to Statistics, n.d.).
Ordinal variables provide a rank order in which there is no measurable distance between items being ranked. Interval variables are equally spaced but have no true zero point.
Ratio variables are equally spaced interval variables that do have a true zero point (Introduction to Statistics, n.d.). Source: (Introduction to Statistics, n.d.) 1-8. Sample and Population
The population is the larger group in which the researcher has interest, the sample is the portion of that larger population that the
researcher studies. Thus to determine what portion of male college students play sports the researcher selects a sample of male college students to study and applies the results to
all male college students. 1-12. Qualitative and quantitative data on a tax return Item Scale of Measurement Qualitative/Quantitative Income in dollars
