are four main areas where errors can take place; these are respondent error, situational error, measurer error, also known as researcher error and an error with the data collection. Looking
at each of these we can explain what it meant by each error and give an example of how it may manifest. The first is the respondent error. In
any price of research there will be the desire to obtain data that can be applied to a wide population. To gain this a sample will be used; there are
different sampling methods to ensure there is a suitable demographic stratification. However there are some elements that are less able to be controlled where the respondent will not give a
correct answer, have insufficient knowledge or decide to purposefully mislead the research. An example of this was seen in the 1997 general election in the UK. There was a general
reluctance on the part of many voters to express an opinion that was different to the perceived general attitude in the media (Coleman, 1998). The reluctance of respondents to give
extreme or unpopular view points may result in erroneous results. Situational errors are where there are flawed results as a result of the situation. For example, where there are
personal points of view to be questioned and there are fears that the answers may be overhead if it an curb side interview it is unlikely to yield the correct
results. If the question are sensitive the same fear may exist if there is the concern over anonymity, again, more likely to be seen with a curb side interview. The
situation needs to suit the type of information sought. Measurer error is also a potential issue, where question have been designed in order to ensure there is no bias
