the medical staff to choose the treatment which is most likely to benefit their patients. In the case presented there is an impressive difference in the mean survival rates which
appears to indicate the need for more funding and support for the new treatment regimes. The traditional treatments see a mean survival rate of 9.6 weeks, and the trial produces
a mean of 10.75 weeks. For a terminally ill patient and their family the additional 8 days can be important, therefore there is a potentially emotional bias to support research
that gives patients this extra time. However, this emotional bias and desire to find ways of extending life should not result in irrational choices which may not be a good
as they appear. To consider the value of this statistic other issues need to be considered, including the range, variance, standard deviation and consideration of the actual underlying results
that lead to those statistics. The first consideration need to be that of the mean which is presented. This can be very misleading as it is the average measured
by taking the total of the scores and then dividing it by the number of the sample (Curwin and Slater, 2003). The same result can come from a wide variety
of underlying results. It may be that the underlying results are density population, all similar, but it may also be that they are not evenly distributed and may be widely
distributed. A higher average does not necessarily mean that more people are living for longer, some may be living longer, and some may be having a short survival rate.
The first consideration will be the way that the underlying statistic given is are represented by the mean. There are several approaches which can be used to measure average. The
