Von Huben 4/2010 Please Introduction Michael Crichton is the author of some of the most entertaining books ever written, including Jurassic Park, The Andromeda Strain and The Lost World among others. His 2004 "techno-thriller" State of Fear is another in his string of plausible "what if" scenarios. This paper consider whether modern day actions are close to those in the book; and draws comparisons between todays science and Crichtons scenario. Discussion Michael Crichton, talented though he undoubtedly was, saw no threat in climate change, and that is the theme of this book. Like those people who believe that the Moon landings were actually faked on a sound stage somewhere, Crichton apparently believed that global warming is fake and the threat does not exist. Or rather, this book suggests that the threat has been greatly exaggerated. The plot of his book can be summarized rather easily: a group of eco-terrorists, concerned that global warming is not being taken seriously, creates a series of "disasters" and blames it on climate change. They are willing to kill thousands of people if they can increase awareness of the problem. They are foiled by Our Heroes. The protagonist of the novel is an environmental lawyer named Peter Evans, who is an associate at an LA law firm that handles mostly environmental issues. Crichton paints him as someone who accepts received knowledge about the seriousness of global warming without doing any research of his own.
