beginning of a twelve-year pursuit of a high school diploma. Over the years, age has become the official gauge that measures when a child is ready to start school.
In 1960, 80.7 percent of American youngsters were enrolled in school between the ages of five and six years, and by 1960, the figure was 96.5 percent (West, 1996,

the child have a stay-at-home mother, or has he or she spent time prior to kindergarten in either preschool, nursery school or daycare programs? The child who has already
had exposure to a classroom type of environment and has already interacted with children of approximately the same age will, in all likelihood, better adjust to the kindergarten setting.
