that is conjured by the term star, whether applied to the motion picture, music, television industries or to a sports celebrity. It represents, for various reasons, something bright, beautiful,
and intense. A star is something to admire and to attempt to emulate. However, the term implies an ethereal quality that the average moral person wishes to become
as a way of achieving a kind of immortality. In his article on authors who have become stars, Hugh Look (1999) admitted, "Stardom is notoriously hard to define but
easy to recognize in actors and pop stars" (p. 12). Look (1999) contended that the definitive and "essential" characteristic was something known as "star quality" (p. 12). Furthermore,
"Full stardom only happens when that quality is widely recognized by the public and rewarded by attention" (Look, 1999, p. 12). All people classified as stars, whether they be
of films, television or sports, are revered by their fans as icons and heroes. According to historian Daniel J. Boorstin, a star "is a person who is well known
for his well-knownness" (Quoted in Newbury, 2000, p. 272). There is a lofty eminence attached to stars of all professions that inspires awe within the general public that longs
to become one of them, and miraculously change from ordinary to extraordinary. Film stars were the first internationally recognized mode of stardom because they were at the forefront of modern
media technology. In the early years of motion pictures, the images of film stars were tightly controlled by their respective studios and the public relations spokespersons they employed (Sochen,
