especially in the international markets. This has facilitated the fast global spread of the brand. When looking at the organization they have had to change and adapt to meet the
changes and influences of the environment. To consider the firm may be considered in terms of the general external and internal environment as well as social and environment influences.
2. Environmental Analysis 2.1 External Environment There are many external influences, these are influences the firm cannot control, but has to respond to.
A major influence between 2008 and 2010 has been the global economy. The market in which Starbucks is operating has been increasing overall, although it is under threat as discretionary
spending has been impacted on consumer behaviour during the 2008/9 credit crunch (Lynn, 2008). There have been price drops, increased efforts to promote loyalty and marketing has increased, along with
cost cutting reducing the number of cannibalistic stores in the US and refocusing on core competences to increase profit margins. Starbucks operates
in the gourmet coffee market, while the coffee market itself is shrinking, this segment of the coffee market appears to be increasing (Kotler and Keller, 2008; Schilling, 2006). This is
a market that is growing and taking market share from other areas of the coffee market, specifically the cheaper jar brands. The general
