Of the 8,500, Starbucks operates more than 5,200 shops itself, 2,800 are licensed in different locations, e.g., hotels and airports (Murray, 2005). Starbucks also distributes its coffees through grocery stores (Murray, 2005). The corporation does have officers, Chairman and Global Analyst; President, CEO, and Director; two executive vice-presidents and two senior vice-presidents (Murray, 2005) but they do not publish any kind of organization chart. Starbucks employees more than 96,000 employees whom they call partners and they hire 200 more employees as they open two or three new stores every day (Murray, 2005; Stopper, 2004). The founders had strong beliefs: "As the connection to customers, partners (employees) are the key to success" (Stopper, 2004, p. 21). The corporation also has three management principles by which they live: 1. We reward those who contribute, and share the wealth when were successful (Stopper, 2004, p. 21). 2. We are held accountable. Executives meet regularly with partner groups (i.e., employees), communicate via voice mail and videos, and make store visits (Stopper, 2004, p. 21). Mission reviews are held and partners may challenge actions they believe to be counter to Starbucks values (Stopper, 2004, p. 21). Over 300 cards a month are received from partners voicing a variety of concerns, each of which receives an answer within 14 days (Stopper, 2004, p. 21). An anonymous compliance hotline is also in operation (Stopper, 2004, p. 21). 3. We measure how were doing. In a partner survey conducted by Hewitt Associates, 82 percent rated the company favorably and only 3 percent were unfavorable. Our "engagement" survey yielded a 73 percent positive response.
