and Ahab. It is a story more often explicated for its themes of good and evil, and issues of religion. However, there are numerous characters throughout the novel that truly
help to establish the characterization of Ahab, as well as the story. With that in mind the following paper examines one of the primary characters, Starbuck, illustrating how he views
life and how his views differ from Ishmael and Ahab within Melvilles novel. Starbuck The characters of Ishmael, the survivor and narrator of the tale, and Ahab, the
man behind the disastrous voyage, are two very different individuals. "Ishmael leaves the land and the ordinary thinking of a schoolteacher to voyage on the ocean, which for Melville holds
the great mystery, from which the mind can never return" (Friedlander, 2004). In essence, Ishmael is an observer and an adventurer. He is not a man who expects certain things
from life and he merely enjoys the experiences, not making judgments necessarily, but merely observing. Ahab, on the other hand, is a man who is driven to seek answers.
He wants revenge on the whale, which often symbolizes the devil and evil in Ahabs mind. Ahab is, in many ways, a man who is blind to the beauty and
wonder of nature, or the natural balance of things as he is determined to kill the whale. As one author notes, "Ahab destroys himself and his ship and crew because
he cannot give up the quest, even though he knows it is crazy" (Friedlander, 2004). With a brief understanding of the two primary characters of the novel in mind
