Bacteria are found in practically every environment. Some are completely harmless when it comes to human health. Others, however, can be pathogenic.
Others can play a varied role when it comes to our health. The Staphyloccoccus genus is an excellent example. There are over thirty species in that genera
(NHS, 2007). Only three pose any real danger to human health (NHS, 2007). These are Staphyloccoccus aureus. Staphyloccoccus epidermidis, and Staphyloccoccus saphrophyticus (NHS, 2007). Staphyloccoccus
aureus is found in the soft tissues of even healthy individuals. In most cases the presence of this bacteria is not a concern. When this bacteria does
present a concern that concern can range from very mild to very serious dependent on the specific factors at play. Staphyloccoccus aureus,
of course is one of many in the Staphyloccoccus genera. The organism is identified by first culturing it and then by streaking to insure that a pure sample has
been obtained. Because Staphylococcus is typically streaked on Mannitol Salt Agar (MSA)with 7.5% salt because that medium is selective for this growth (Furlong). The organism ferments manitol and this
characteristic is used as another aid in identification (Furlong). The Mannitol culture contains a phenol red indicator (Furlong). When the fermentation occurs the phenol red turns yellow (Furlong).
