between Stanley and Blanche. Blanche is a bit of a liar and obviously a woman who is vulnerable to her own truths as she pretends to be a lady of class and culture. Stanley is exactly the opposite as he never pretends to be anything but what he is, although what he appears to be is a pure animal who lives on instinct and blatant honesty. As one would imagine, the two clash incredibly, though there is also a sense that the two balance one another, although Blanche is ultimately destroyed by his brutality. In the following paper we examine aspects of their relationship in Williams play. Stanley and Blanche When Stanley and Blanche first meet he has only just arrived from bowling. At first they merely stare at each other, taking the others appearance in. Blanche, being the lady she assumes she is, offers the introductions saying "You must be Stanley. Im Blanche" (Williams NA). He then casually offers her a drink which she declines saying she does not drink. Stanley presents us with the first of his in-depth examinations of the nature of people when he says "Well, there are some people that rarely touch it, but it touches them often" (Williams NA). In this we see a subtle hint that Stanley, while something of a macho male, is one who is not ignorant about the ways of people. He sees their weaknesses in an incredibly powerful way, something that will eventually lead him to attack Blanche through her weakness and her presumed position in society. He then proceeds to tell Blanche that he believes one should be comfortable, an explanation for why he is taking off his shirt in front of her.
