Unlike most of the other theories included in the text, this is one that originates with Wood (2003). Standpoint theory addresses a primary
shortcoming of all other leading communication theories, that which does not allow for the presence or operation of different perspectives even within the same group. Thus when discussing either
men or women, standpoint theory holds that both men and women may have greatly different perspectives on matters, and that those differences are gender-based. Wood (2003) uses a health
care example and a quality that she defines as grace. This quality consists of granting forgiveness for wrongs done by others or putting aside the needs of the individual
in favor of the needs of another, such as is common in the field of nursing (Wood, 2003). Grace also allows diffusion of ill will in adversarial communicative situations
(Wood, 2003). According to Wood (2003), a standpoint represents a point of perspective that colors the individuals perception and communication. As example,
a man might view his home as his refuge and as a symbol of what society labels as success, while his wife may, in addition to the mans view, see
