rely upon society to do it for them. Dr. Thomas Stockmann and Joan of Arc are confronted vastly different circumstances, and yet both are relegated to the biblical roles
of David battling against Goliath. They oppose their accusers to state their cases regarding standing alone, with varying results. Dr. Thomas Stockmann is the quintessential stoic Norwegian. He
is a responsible husband, father, and citizen. When he discovers that the local baths have been contaminated, he feels it is his professional and civic duty to publicize this
health hazard. This means facing off against a stony government bureaucracy, headed by his own brother Peter, the Burgomaster (mayor), who also happens to be the chairman of the
Baths Committee. He first turns to the press, thinking they will provide a forum for his lone voice to be heard. But the community corporate sector, represented by
Peter; Hovstad, who is editor of the Peoples Messenger newspaper that is interested more in public welfare, and the wealthy Aslaksen, who is the primary investor in the Peoples Messenger.
When told during his interrogation that the majority is always right, the solitary Dr. Stockmann proclaims, "The majority is never right... Thats one of these lies in society that
