schools are answering the need to have all students acquire the skills they need for life is through the implementation of standards-based instruction. Accompanying this trend is a parallel move
towards using criteria-based approaches to assessment and grading at all levels of education, that is, grading methods that are, likewise, based on standards (Sadler 175). This trend is comprised of
two steps, the assessment/grading methods themselves and the way in which this data is reported to parents. Classroom grading criteria: The term "standards" covers a broad field of guidelines,
which have been established for each area of instruction. There are also several categories of standards that teachers consider. Performance standards "define the levels of learning" (Lewis 744). In a
standards-based system, grading and reporting should be "criterion-referenced," that is, educators should identify "what they want their students to learn and be able to do and what evidence they will
use to judge that achievement or performance" (Guskey 20-21). Susan Colby describes how she, and her colleagues, realized early-on in the trend towards standards-based teaching that a new grading
system was required in order to achieve this goal. Colby describes an ingenious system, in which each childs performance on each standard is evaluated. The beauty of this system is
that it gives teachers an assessment tool that goes beyond the simplistic orientation of traditional methods of grading. For example, the "o" designation in this system stands for teacher observation,
and this is accompanied by a simple system that reminds the teacher as to what was observed. Using this system, Colby and her fellow teachers can tell at a
glance if a student needs more work on a specific standard, and address this need with "different resources, types of instruction, and forms of assessment" (Colby 53-54). This change in
