One set of authors, Johnson, Jordan and Poehner (2005) even questioned the validity of using TOEFL as an accurate measure of proficiency in English. TOEFL has been a standard for years but these authors suggest that "the variety of English tested was not the variety of English used in day-to-day interactions" (Johnson, Jordan and Poehner, 2005, p. 71). This is a confusing statement to make insofar as anyone who has studied and learned a second or third language and then, traveled in the country of those languages, one would find the same thing there as here. Each geographic region has its own dialect but that does not preclude us from teaching proper English in our schools or Hoch Deutch or Parisienne Francais. There must be a standard that constitutes proper English and that is not necessarily everyones day-to-day English but everyone should be able to speak and write properly, according to the same standard rules. One article reviewed stands out because it provides information everyone who discusses testing and assessing should know. The Hughes (DATE) article discusses types of tests and what the lingo of testing means, such as validity, etc. Different types of tests are used for different purposes, which the other authors do not seem to consider in their discussions. In terms of language, for instance, a proficiency test measures the students ability to speak and write that language (Hughes, DATE). The standardized tests that are the subject of so much discussion are norm-referenced, which means, the scoring system is based on many tests and trials (Hughes, DATE).
