fall asleep. Discussion Why is it necessary that we sleep at all? Scientists are still not entirely sure why we need sleep, but studies done with rats conclusively demonstrate that
sleep is necessary (Brain basics: understanding sleep, 2007). The normal life span of a white rate is 2-3 years, but rats deprived of REM sleep "survive only about 5 weeks
on average, and rats deprived of all sleep stages live only about 3 weeks" (Brain basics: understanding sleep, 2007). In addition, sleep-deprived rats develop a low body temperature as well
as "sores on their tail and paws" that might indicate an impaired immune system (Brain basics: understanding sleep, 2007). The effects of sleep-deprivation are well known. People who havent had
enough sleep are drowsy and have trouble concentrating; sleep-deprivation that continues for any length of time can lead to memory problems, decreased physical performance and impaired ability to do math
(Brain basics: understanding sleep, 2007). If the deprivation continues for an extended period of time, the deprived person may develop mood swings and hallucinations (Brain basics: understanding sleep, 2007). Some
experts think that "sleep gives neurons used while we are awake a chance to shut down and repair themselves. Without sleep, neurons may become so depleted in energy or so
polluted with byproducts of normal cellular activities that they begin to malfunction" (Brain basics: understanding sleep, 2007). When a person is in deep sleep, the body releases growth hormone
"in children and young adults"; in addition, the body shows increased cellular production and "reduced breakdown of proteins during deep sleep" (Brain basics: understanding sleep, 2007). Proteins are necessary for
cellular growth and for "repair of damage from factors like stress and ultraviolet rays," so deep sleep "may truly be beauty sleep" (Brain basics: understanding sleep, 2007). Finally, brain activity
