According to Erik Homberger Erikson, one of the most influential psychoanalysts of the twentieth century, the human life
cycle can be divided into eight specific stages of psychosocial development. Perhaps the most notable component of Eriksons work, in fact, is his role in refining and expanding Freuds
theories regarding human developmental stages (Boeree, 2002). Unlike Freud who theorized on only five specific stages of development, Erikson divided human development into eight specific stages, stages in which
our personalities are formed and stages which determine, to a large extent, our success or lack of success in various ventures (Boeree, 2002). Ericksons theories are particularly interesting when
applied in field interviews. The purpose of this paper is to delineate Ericksons stages more completely and to structure specific questions around those stages so that they could be
utilized in an interview of a sixty-five year old woman. As has been noted, Erikson identified eight specific stages. These stages include:
1. Trust verses Mistrust, 2. Autonomy verses Shame & Doubt, 3. Initiative verses Guilt, 4. Industry verses Inferiority, 5. Identity verses Role Confusion, 6.
Intimacy verses Isolation, 7. Generativity verses Stagnation, and 8. Integrity verses Despair (Sharkee, 2002). Eriksons developmental stages not only occur in a certain order but at
a certain time in our development in accordance with both our genetics and psychosocial stimuli (Boeree, 2002). In their normal progression stage one occurs between infancy and two years
of age, stage two occurs between two and four years of age, stage three between four and six years of age, and stage four occurs between six years of age
