anything to obtain that power. Now, although many people put all the blame on Lady Macbeth. While she was surely responsible for some of the demise of Macbeth, the truth is that he possessed a weak character that was not prepared for power, and as such was easily led by the pressures of his wife, pressures which led to his decline. In the following paper we examine the decline of Macbeth in four different stages. Stage One In the very beginning of the story we see Macbeth as a noble and courageous man. He has recently been incredibly successful in a battle and is essentially full of himself. He is innocent at this time, as it involves the true powerful desire for being king. But, he is informed by witches that he is destined to be king. This changes how he looks at life, and begins to cause doubts in his approach to life. He is not sure what to do with this information, but he is greatly intrigued by such. And, this intrigue deepens when he is informed that the first part of their prophecy has come true, that relating to his rise in position. In the beginning, as he sits and ponders the prophecy, we see a man who is perhaps willing to sit back and let prophecy go its own course, without intervention from him. This is evidenced when he says, "If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me,/ Without my stir" (Shakespeare I iii). He seems merely content that someday he will be king. However, his wife learns of this prophecy and begins her plotting.
