Von Huben 5/2010 Please Introduction Stagecraft is a term that encompasses all the work done to create and present a play,
with the exception of writing the play itself, and performing it. That is, the actors are part of the production but not considered as part of the technical process. Everything
else-from building sets to lighting them, costuming the actors, collecting props, developing a sound plan-is stagecraft. This paper describes some of these processes and why they are necessary. Discussion One
definition of stagecraft explains why its so important to the intent of the company: "Stagecraft is a unique adaptation of common construction techniques to the temporary and illusory environment of
the stage" (Ionazzi 7). What appears to be a solid wall or a tangled jungle will vanish in a moment to be replaced by the next set (Ionazzi). "It is
part of the magic that can convey an audience to places they can only reach while in a theater" (Ionazzi 7). This is, after all, why theater people do what
they do: to provide the audience with an experience they cannot find anywhere else. Everything that is done in the theater is done to serve the play. Sets are built
and lit to help convey the meaning of the story; sound is designed to heighten the realism of the setting; props are built or found that conform to the period
(theres no place for a machine gun in a Restoration comedy, for instance-unless the whole production has been taken in a radically different direction). All of these various techniques have
