Dana Corporation is a $3.6 billion company headquartered in Toledo, Ohio and supplying "transmissions, clutches, drive lines and axles for vehicles" (Bowin and Harvey, 2001; p. 88).
The company was cited in In Search of Excellence; routinely is included in the list of The 100 Best Companies to Work for in America; is one of the top
ten companies for mothers to work for; and has a plant listed by Fortune as being one of the top ten in the country. Dana has established itself as
an employer of choice (Graham, 1996) and so is able to select from a high-quality pool of potential candidates when it needs to add employees. Approaches to Staffing and Selection
Dana Corporation uses quality circles, but it uses other tools as well. Danas quality circles are voluntary, with nearly 80 percent of
employees choosing to participate. Dana appears to have been able to implement the spirit of TQM as well as the procedures associated with it. Deming (1986) urged businesses
to do several things that Dana has been able to implement. Among those are Demings (1986) exhortations to * "Drive out fear, so that everyone may work effectively for
the company... * "Break down barriers between departments... * "Remove barriers that rob the hourly worker of his right to pride of workmanship... * "Put everybody in the company to
work to accomplish the transformation. The transformation is everybodys job" (Deming, 1986; p. 24-25). The description that Bowin and Harvey (2001) provide
