faced with student bodies that are more diverse than ever before, and that can present problems. This paper discusses ways in which proper staff development will enable them to handle
a diverse student body appropriately. Discussion One of the challenges of a diverse student body is that not all students will be equally proficient in English. However, this doesnt mean
that they are either lazy or unmotivated, and staff members should not fall into the trap of stereotypical thinking with regard to these students (Calderon, 1999). Calderon suggests that a
new type of teacher is needed for a changing student body; this teacher will have "a repertoire of approaches that uphold high expectations of all students while affirming differences among
students"; the teacher will be "knowledgeable about issues of acculturation and second language acquisitions"; he or she will teach "with multicultural materials that reflect a diversity of experiences and perspectives";
he will establish the classroom "as a safe place to explore issues of difference and prejudice"; he will have "the capacity to work together across differences of race and ethnicity";
he will work well "with individuals and groups from a variety of cultural backgrounds and communities"; he will develop "a greater understanding of all kinds of difference"; and he will
