paper reviews Stacy Permans book about the restaurant chain. Discussion The rules they break: For one thing, they pay their employees a real wage; beginning part-timers earn $10/hour, which is
approximately the same wage Wal-mart pays its full-timers (Macsai, 2009). As a result, In-N-Out has "one of the lowest turnover rates in an industry thats famous for high turnover" (Macsai,
2009). Even more importantly, they have remained true to the principles of Harry Snyder, who founded the company in 1948: they still use only fresh ingredients (there are no freezers
or microwaves in In-N-Out); they custom make every order; they havent gone public; and they do not sell franchises (Macsai, 2009). The food is simple, fresh and good because they
are still concentrating on the same things that they made in 1948: burgers, fries and shakes (Macsai, 2009). They havent expanded their product line or opened up shops in airports
or malls (Macsai, 2009). They remain independent-a real California tradition. Identifying with the Snyders: The family was torn apart by the death of Guy, who presided over the expansion, in
a plane accident; there were also several lawsuits, most having to do with the estate. The student will have to choose which family member speaks to them, but Guy might
be a good choice. He expanded the company from California into three other states but never lost sight of the original goal: to serve nothing by fresh food and provide
great service. In other words, he was able to "grow" the company without compromising it. Family run businesses: There are obviously both pros and cons to running a business with
family members. On the plus side is the fact that they are family, and that means that they have a very close relationship, one that should lead to mutual trust
