births are well recorded but then, little is written about John or Jesus until they reach the age of 30. Zachary, Johns father, "was a priest of the course
of Abia" (Souvay, 1910). At the time, priests were divided into 24 courses; Abia is the eighth course (Souvay, 1910). Elizabeth, Johns mother, was "of the daughters of Aaron" (Souvay,
1910). They were faithful to Gods laws but had no children until John was born in their later years. Scholars think John was born in Ain-Karim, which was southwest of
Jerusalem (Catholic Online, 2007). This birthplace would make John a Nazarite (Bible Encyclopedia, 2006). His birth preceded the birth of Christ by about six months. His early years were spent
in the mountainous part of Judah, which was located between Jerusalem and the Dead Sea (Bible Encyclopedia, 2006). There is some evidence that suggests that John, as an adult, lived
in the dessert as a hermit until about the age of 27 (Catholic Online, 2007). This was contrary to the expectations for the son of a priest; sons generally followed
in their fathers footsteps. Like Jesus, John began preaching at the age of 30 (Catholic Online, 2007). His location was the banks of the Jordan river and his audience comprised
anyone who would listen to him (Catholic Online, 2007). He preached "against the evils of the times and called men to penance and baptism for the Kingdom of Heaven is
