The precise year of the birth of St. Francis of Assisi is unknown, but scholars believe it to be either 1181 or 1182 and it is known that he died
on October 3, 1226 (Robinson "St. Francis"). His father, Petro Bernardone, was successful merchant and his background was that of wealth (Robinson "St. Francis"). His mother, Pica, is believed to
have been part of a noble family in Provence. Francis was not a good student and did not apply himself to his studies. Rather the handsome and dashing young pursued
the frivolities of youth (Robinson "St. Francis"). At the age of 20, Francis was a participant in a minor military engagement with men from the city of Perugia and
was taken captive (Robinson "St. Francis"). It was during his captivity that Franciscan scholars believe that Francis first began to seriously think about religion (Robinson "St. Francis"). After his release,
Francis tried to resume his former practices and his old life, and briefly considered a military career, but the call to a religious life became too strong to be denied
(Robinson "St. Francis"). During this period of his life, Francis prayed for guidance that would direct him on the whether he should
