1226 (Robinson). His family was wealthy, as his father Petro Bernardone, was a successful cloth merchant. Little is known with certainty concerning his mother, Pica, but it has been said
that she belonged to a noble family in Provence (Robinson). His early education was taught by the priests of St. Georges; however, he was never a good student, as in
his younger days, Francis was the epitome of the handsome and dashing young noble who enjoyed frivolity. When he was around age 20, he participated in a minor military
skirmish against men from the city of Perugia and was taken captive for a year (Robinson). It was during this captivity that scholars believe Francis first began to contemplate religious
topics, as he suffered from a prolonged illness over the course of this year. On his release and with returning health, Francis tried to return to his old life and
even considered briefly a military career, but he increasingly felt the call of a religious life of denial and poverty (Robinson). This call created a rife between Francis and his
affluent father, but he never deviated, once chosen, from the narrow path of poverty and service. During the process of his conversion, Francis prayed for guidance as to whether
he should live a contemplative life of prayer or an active life of spreading the gospel to the world (Hammond 14). This led Francis to conclude that "God did not
call him to this state only for himself" but also so that he could serve others (Hammond 14). He soon became noted his own poverty and his compassion for the
poor. Francis was one of two "formidable preachers" who initiated reform with the Church during this era, the other being Domingo de Guzman, St. Dominic (Keller 131). The Church during
