paper discusses his impact on the church. Discussion The first thing of importance is to note the difference between "horizontal" and "vertical" religion. Oddly enough, there isnt a
great deal of information available, but there is enough to give us the idea of what these concepts are. One source suggests that a vertical religion is one in
which people believe "in an up-there God who needs their sacrifices like human beings need food" while a horizontal religion is one in which "God ... can be discovered within
the horizon of all things" (Colglazier, 2003). In a horizontal religion, "all of life takes on a sacred quality" (Colglazier, 2003). There is no way that a person
who believes this doctrine can compartmentalize their life, putting the sacred and profane elements in separate places; every part of life for them is "profoundly religious and deeply spiritual" (Colglazier,
2003). Another source, a Unitarian one, says that their religion is "not a vertical religion, with power, and theological truth, coming down hierarchically. Were what you call a horizontal
religion: everyone is on the same power line - you all get to vote - and we all have the same theological authority: we all get to decide what we
personally believe on our own" (Duncan, 2003). So the concepts are clear: in a "vertical" religion adherents see God as a distant, mystical, unattainable being; in a "horizontal" religion,
God is seen as being constantly present. What has this to do with our saint? St. Boniface was born Winfrid in England but the date of his birth is
