Von Huben 5/2010 Please Introduction St. Augustine is one of the most original thinkers in the history of Christianity, and one of the most influential. After a youth spent in a frank enjoyment of sensual pleasure, he experienced a conversion and gave up his ways to become a scholar and a churchman. But like all those who believe, he faced what seemed an insurmountable contradiction: if God is good, and if all things come from God, how can one account for evil? This paper explains what Augustine suggested as an answer to that question. Discussion He made his argument in a relative short book entitled On Free Choice of the Will, and the title pretty much explains his thinking. The book takes the form of a Socratic dialogue between Augustine and Evodius, in which Augustine asks the young man a series of questions to which Augustine already has the answer-or at least has formed an opinion-in order to get him to arrive at the conclusion for himself. By going down a sort of "list" of concerns about God and evil, Augustine brings Evodius to an understanding of why evil exists in the world created by God. The book begins with Evodiuss plaintive plea: "Please tell me: isnt God the cause of evil?" (Augustine, 1993, p. 1).
