the different mindsets of each author.] Aurelius Augustine was born in 354, son of a pagan father and a Christian mother (Mee and Hammerton, 2004). His father would convert towards
the end of his life (Mee and Hammerton, 2004). It was hearing the eloquent Bishop Ambrose in the late mid- to late-380s that changed Augustines thinking and life; he subsequently
was ordained a priest (Mee and Hammerton, 2004). In Augustines time, to confess had two meanings, one was to acknowledge or report ones faults to God and the other was
to praise God, to speak about ones love for God (Barnes & Noble Learning Network, 2003). Both meanings or purposes are evident in St. Augustines Confessions in which he relates
his ascent from sinfulness to faithfulness, although he does so in a complex way (Barnes & Noble Learning Network, 2003). The first nine Books relate Augustines life up to the
death of his mother and then, the story takes an abrupt turn as Augustine puts forth his theology and philosophy. While the shift in themes is sudden, it can be
understood in the same way as the double meaning of confessions - the story recounts his sinful life and his redemption, which is a religious and philosophical matter (Barnes &
