of the church, but also a man of the people for he understood what it was to be human, to be moved by beauty, and to find it difficult to
balance being human with looking to God. St. Augustine: Medieval Thought and Beyond First and foremost, we note that one of the dilemmas of St. Augustine, as referred
to in the introduction, was that which related to living on earth, being human, and looking to God. One author defines the dilemma as follows: "how to remain committed to
active engagement in this world while knowing and accepting that this world and so our action within it must remain imperfect and incomplete" (Bathory, 1997; 73). This was something
that clearly affected the lives of those who lived during medieval times as they faced hardships we can only imagine. They lived a life of great struggle and looked to
the church for many things, not the least of which was a way in which to look at their world and continue on surviving. In this, knowing that a man
like St. Augustine, a man from centuries before, was of the same mind, he clearly would have influenced the people and made them see that even a man of God
had similar problems with being alive as a human while remaining in the faith. These are also issues that plague the religious today. How to face the world, often
