of one woman, Spring Moon. It is an intricate story that tells of traditions and the power of family within both the Chinese and Western cultures that the Chinese must
fit within. The following paper provides a general review of the book through discussing some of the major themes, the traditions of the Chinese in family and society, the conflicts
the Chinese encounter with regards to Western influence, and the character of Spring Moon. Spring Moon Clearly one of the most important themes in this work involves family and
tradition. It is a story that takes place in China, for the most part, during the 19th and 20th centuries and speaks of great change for China and the Chinese
people. But, at the same time these people carry on with many of the traditions they possess in order to still maintain a sense of culture, a powerful sense of
culture. Although change is necessary through all the revolution of China in the novel, the people must still find a sense of identity in their traditions. Just because the social
changes are inevitable does not mean that the people still do not need their cultural identity. Throughout the novel we see examples of the traditions that many will not
let go. There are, however, traditions that people such as Spring Moon do not wish to adhere to any longer and they see the changes around them as an opportunity,
perhaps, to seek change in their traditions to a certain degree. In essence we find that some of the characters pick and choose which traditions are important enough to keep
as the world and society around them changes. From these perspectives we can see that the major theme is tradition and finding and keeping ones cultural identity. Whether that
