It conjures images of ornate cathedrals and Gothic castles, of dashing knights rescuing damsels in distress. This time has become idealized to the point where it resembles a
distorted fantasy of bizarre customs, pagan rituals, and stereotypical people. However, the historical reality is that this Gothic world, also referred to as the Middle Ages, more closely resembles
the present than readers of Geoffrey Chaucer or Thomas Malory might imagine. From the Hellenic Era, from approximately 323 BC to the fifth century, and the Middle Ages from
the fifth century to around 1500, two important contributions - Christianity and trade - served as a foundation, for which the building blocks of the modern civilization are cemented. THE
HELLENIC WORLD The ancient Greeks created a civilization unlike anything up until that time. It was a self-contained society with a rigid class structure that celebrated knowledge and
culture. However, because the civilization was comprised largely of a landed aristocracy in which wealth was handed down from one generation to the next instead of being spread around
to perpetuate the wealth of the polis or city-state. This meant that a large segment of the population was living in poverty and had to rely upon trade and
barter to exchange goods, services, and currency. Trade was the only means by which poorer classes could improve their financial status. Soon, so many people were engaged in
some form of metal trade this necessitated an expansion of the Greek Empire into southern Italy (Roberts 173). This region provided much-needed access to the metals that were unavailable
in Greece (Roberts 173). Nevertheless, despite the limited integration that increased trade encouraged, the classes still remained disparate, which ultimately resulted in the disintegration of this once mighty empire
