Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This 17 page paper actually responds to the question: What are the outcomes when college students are able to fulfill their spiritual needs? The essay begins with an introduction to spiritual development in adults. One author believes spirituality is part of human nature. Studies have shown that despite the media reporting on binge drinking, a large proportion of our college students are very spiritual and they believe it is important to integrate spirituality and/or religion into their lives. Many are turning to the traditional morals and practices their parents avoided. A study from UCLA is discussed because it provides the most amount of data relative to spirituality on our college campuses. The differences between students who are highly spiritual and those who are not are discussed. Data are included. Bibliography lists 12 sources.

occurring during the second half of a persons life (Mulqueen and Elias, 2000). Jung is certainly not the only theorist who discussed spirituality and spiritual maturity. Weibust and Thomas noted
that according to the Hindu faith, the higher level of spirituality cannot happen until after family and career have been stabilized; Erikson, Fowler, Maslow, Levinson and Loevinger all presented work
that supported this belief (Mulqueen and Elias, 2000). Much has been written about both cognitive learning and spiritual development but little has been written about the connection between the two

agree that spirituality is developed over time (Mulqueen and Elias, 2000). It begins with faith that is practiced or projected by important others in the childs life, its nature is
concrete and literal at this stage (Mulqueen and Elias, 2000). The next step is a transition to the beliefs of the community (Mulqueen and Elias, 2000). Faith or spirituality is
still not ones own, that comes later as individuals become more mature adults, at which time, they develop their own individual faith that allows them to deal with the complexities
and uncertainty of life (Mulqueen and Elias, 2000). The last stage in the development of spirituality happens when the person makes "a commitment to universal values, such as love and
justice" (Mulqueen and Elias, 2000). Mulqueen and Elias present a good discussion on the cognitive role in spiritual development but they seem faith and spirituality as one in the same.
This is not necessarily true. Questions that are consistently asked with this topic is he difference between being religious and being spiritual. Spirituality is extremely had to define (Mulqueen and
