stood the test of time and still serves to fascinate audiences and actors. The following paper examines the film version of Hamlet starring Mel Gibson, discussing the spiritual wars within the film. Hamlet As would readily be expected, the character of Hamlet is the character who suffers the most internal struggles, and experiences the most spiritual conflicts as they involve himself and those around him. In the past there have been many Hamlets who have been perhaps weak and prone to whining about their situation. With Mel Gibson we have an individual who is clearly strong and determined. One critic notes the following in those regards: "Gibson makes the most of Hamlets physical agility, playfulness, disgust, and rage. In his eyes we read the surge of different feelings that move through this grieving son as he reflects upon the revelations of his dead fathers ghost (Paul Scofield), nurses a revulsion towards the murderous deed of his uncle (Alan Bates), and determines to drive away the love of Ophelia (Helena Bonham-Carter)" (Brussat; Brussat). Interestingly enough, another famous and well done version of Hamlet is considered to be the one with Kenneth Branagh. One critic notes that Gibsons portrayal is powerful in the same sense: "As for Hamlet, Branagh (like Mel Gibson in the 1991 film) has no interest in playing him as an apologetic mope" (Ebert). In the written play there is a great deal of spiritual war within the character of Ophelia. But, within this film version Zeffirelli "strips the play of...most of Ophelias lines" (AllWatchers.com). As such most of her conflict is not seen, or not seen as much as it is in other versions, or seen in the written play.
