is compassionate and caring will be hurt by family members, by friends, by colleagues, by other significant persons in their life. We can be insulted, ostracized, persecuted, discriminated against and so on. There is injustice in this world. We may become a victim of it or we may simply know about abusive acts committed against others. These are all components in the human experience. How people deal with that hurt is what separates those who live a fairly happy life and those who are miserable a good deal of the time. Many writers, such as Robin Casarjian, advise us to forgive, forgive those who hurt us or who mistreat us in numerous other ways. Casarjian says that forgiveness is an act of self-love, it is a practical and beneficial thing to do (Casarjian, 1992). The reason forgiveness is a practical thing to do is that by forgiving the person who has hurt or angered us is the only way to find peace and freedom (Casarjian, 1992). We get to start again without the burden of anger, pain and hurt burdening us so that we walk around feeling heavy (Casarjian, 1992). Holding on to the anger or pain guarantees that we will become physically ill and emotionally upset (Casarjian, 1992). Casarjian says that "[forgiveness] promises the release from the hold that anothers attitudes and actions have over us" (Casarjian, 1992, p. 10). Casarjian goes on to say that forgiveness "is the means for taking what is broken and making it whole " (Casarjian, 1992, p. 10). It is the persons spirit that is broken and the only way to heal this rift in our being is to forgive because forgiveness is the way to transform our lives (Casarjian, 1992).
