that an individual undertakes in undertaking the goal of becoming closer aligned with God. In other words, it means striving to reach a higher spiritual plane. This process, when interpreted
through the perspective of Christian worship, means striving to be more like Christ and to keep the Holy Spirit in ones consciousness, so that personal behavior reflects the Will of
the Almighty. The teachings of Scripture provide the foundation on which this spiritual journey is based. While it is true that the problems of nuclear armaments, environmental pollution and
global warming did not confront the people of the biblical eras, the basic character of humanity has not changed over the millennia. Greed, anger, violence, adultery, lust, the desire for
political power and dominance were all evident in biblical times, just as they are today. Scriptural guidance aids in understanding these temptations and problems within a spiritual framework that is
in tune with the way in which God has guided humanity throughout its history. However, as Robin Lovin has pointed out, while people are aware of scriptural teachings, "each
generation has to make its own mistakes and learn this wisdom for itself" (Lovin 46). What Scripture teaches is the Word of God, but, as Paul points out in Romans
2:14-15, it is also possible to do what is right instinctively, which shows that what Scripture requires is written on the heart (Lovin 46). As this indicates, part of
my basic philosophy of spiritual development is to draw on Scriptural guidance, but also to cultivate a consciousness that keeps God in the forefront of my thinking so that my
